MISSION OF MOTHER OF
DIVINE GRACE SCHOOL
At the heart of Catholic education is the student's
instruction in Catholic doctrine and Christian values. No other
goal supersedes that of leading a student to a greater knowledge
of and a more profound love of God.
As an extension of this goal, the school's aim is to
develop the student's intellectual competencies, increase the
student's awareness of the responsibility to use God-given
talents for the good of society, to encourage the student to be
sensitive to the needs of local and global communities, and to
be committed to the cause of peace and justice both nationally
and internationally. We believe that these goals are best
realize when family and school community work together to assure
that each student realizes that they are special, loved, and
called to make a difference in the world.
Mother of Divine Grace School Community continually strives
to provide a Christ-centered environment that permeates the
spiritual, intellectual, emotional, and social life of the
student. The administration and faculty if Mother of Divine
Grace School willingly assumes responsibility for the spiritual
and academic development to the students entrusted to their
care. We expect parents to be supportive of these efforts of
the parish, and by providing their children with a home
environment that is conductive to the growth of Christian values
and virtues.
HISTORY OF MOTHER OF
DIVINE GRACE SCHOOL
On October 1, 1944, Sisters of the Most Holy Trinity
arrived at Mother of Divine Grace Parish to do social work among
the community. Their ministry in Catholic education began in
1947 when the second and third floors of the church were
converted into classrooms. The beginning of the academic year in
September, 1947, saw one hundred seven children enrolled in
grades Kindergarten through four. Grades five and six were added
a year later, with grades seven and eight added in 1949 and
1950, respectively. The first graduating class was in June,
1951. When the new church opened in November 1950, work was
begun to convert the first floor of the old church into new
classrooms, By 1963, with the school in disrepair, and costs of
bringing it up to code with local ordinances prohibitive a
decision needed to be made. Our pastor, Fr. Henry Chapman
recognized the need for a new educational facility to meet the
changing needs of the students, so a Building Fund was
established and Construction was begun on the new school. The
summer of 1964 saw the demolition of the old school building, an
in September 1964, students entered the new school building on
Monmouth Street. Many changes have occurred since that time,
including the addition of a Kindergarten computer lab. Today,
there are over two hundred students enrolled at MDG, taught by a
team of dedicated professional Christian educators, aided by an
active Home and School Association, and supported by a local
Alumni Association. Through the presence of out pastor,
teachers, parents, and church community we continue to strive to
give our children a solid Christian education to prepare them
for their life in the world.
